What Is A Healthy Dog Food?
There is much debate over what is considered a healthy dog food. To provide the best dog food for your dog, you will probably have to spend a LOT of money – pretty much like feeding a child.
The healthiest dog food will be all-natural, all-organic, freshly made, with the correct amount of vitamins, minerals, and enzymes needed for your particular dog. But unfortunately, not everyone can afford to feed their pet like this, nor does everyone have the time needed to prepare food like this.[sinplet adsense-top]
So a healthy dog food must be considered along with your budget for pet food. If you cannot afford a high-quality, healthy dog food, you can supplement your current dog food with some human-grade ingredients, or some dog multi-vitamins, to increase the amount of nutrition your dog is getting.
Add Human-grade Food For A Healthy Dog Food
Here are some suggestions of how to add human-grade food to your dog’s diet:
First and most important: remember, there are a few ingredients dogs should not eat <– refer to this page for list of no-no foods for dogs.
Chicken: chicken meat is probably the most affordable to be adding to your dog food if you are on a budget. I usually get chicken thighs, with skin and bone-in, for $0.99 to $1.19 per pound at my local grocery. I cut the meat and skin from the bone and serve raw. If serving organ meat (like liver), only feed once every few days.
Grains: if you are supplementing your current dog food, I wouldn’t recommend any more grains, as there are probably more than you realize in your dog food.
Vegetables: Dogs do love vegetables and they provide some great nutrients for them. I do not cook my vegetables, but I do puree them, as a dog cannot break a vegetable down (their intestines are much shorter than ours.) I buy frozen vegetables, put them in my blender with some water and apple cider vinegar, and serve a little at a time with each meal. I don’t serve ‘nightshade’ vegetables, such as spinach, as that interferes with calcium absorption.
Eggs: another great, inexpensive protein to supplement your dog’s food. I give my dogs raw eggs – both yolk and white – although this is a great debate among homemade dog food people for various reasons (salmonella and biotin deficiency being the main issues). If you do not feel comfortable feeding raw eggs, simply cook scrambled eggs for your dogs. But realize that cooking meats and eggs destroys some valuable nutrients and enzymes.
But any/all of these will help create a healthy dog food and a healthier dog.
